AC Help Without the Sales Pressure

Not sure what to do when the house won't cool down? Start with a few practical questions.

Before you call for service

  • Check your thermostat setting and whether it is calling for cooling.
  • Look for a clogged air filter and replace it if needed.
  • Check whether supply vents are blocked.
  • If the breaker has tripped, don't repeatedly reset it; contact a professional.

If you smell burning, see smoke, or suspect an electrical hazard, stop using the equipment and seek qualified help. Don't open electrical panels or handle refrigerant yourself.

Should you repair or replace?

Ask about the system's age, the specific failed component, the written repair cost, warranty coverage, and the estimated cost of a comparable replacement. A single repair doesn't automatically mean you need a new unit.

Questions to ask a contractor

  1. What is the diagnosis, and can you explain the test results?
  2. Can I have an itemized written estimate?
  3. What warranty covers parts and labor?
  4. Is my existing system properly sized for the home?
  5. Can I verify your California contractor license?
